Luckily for them, most people will never have the opportunity to compare Panoramic x-rays, of their own implants, done by 3 different dentists - who were all tasked with the identical procedure - I have.In turn, I can assure you that Dr. Sperling's level of skill(implant spacing, depth, straightness, passivity of the eventual crown etc.) is spectacular. I came to Dr. Yu for tooth removal and bone grafting. I cancelled all my meetings next day, because I was expecting to be in pain. To begin with, I missed the moment of the tooth removal. I was bracing myself for the procedure, but, before I could notice anything, she already had my tooth out. Now, after all grafting and stretching, I was expecting with horror what would happen after the anesthesia wears out. Nothing happened. No pain, no bleeding, not even a minor discomfort. I had a serious decision to make on whether or not to have two implants and had some possible gum disease. There are lots of things not to like about getting major dental work done, but Dr. Sperling and her crew reduce those to a minimum. My best evidence is from the blood pressure cuff that measured over 170 as I was escorted to the chair but showed a drop of nearly 40 a few minutes later. And no, this wasn't due to sedation; I was driving myself. They maintain a truly calming office atmosphere.That calming starts with the graciousness of reception and continues through examination and diagnosis. I was impressed at the detail of technical explanation that confirmed my dentist's initial diagnosis and the technology that showed, again with fully explained detail, why I needed to choose a solution. Once an extraction and bone graft were selected, the procedure was fully explained, staff scheduled and expedited the appointment.Soon, during my repair, I endured the inevitable pinches, but I also witnessed an obviously capable professional who considerately explained and warned of the things I would sense but not feel and could demonstrate during pauses her ability to sense and supervise an entire office while her patient remains the center of attention.Of course, it would be better to keep your teeth healthy enough to avoid needing Dr. Sperling's care, but when it needs to be done, you might as well get it done by an extraordinary professional and a functional team that you can marvel at while you're under their care.read more

I have Sjogren's Sydrome, an autoimmune disease that attacks moisture producing glands like salivary glands. I have been fighting its symptoms for years, mainly severe dry mouth. For the past two years (and thousands of dollars) I've been on a quest to find a periodontist that I trust. You already know I've succeeded by the 5 stars above. It took me five periodontists straight from Washingtonian magazine's 'Top Dentists' before meeting Dr. Sperling. They had wildly different treatment plans from, "do a deep cleaning for $1500" to "gum flap surgery and bone grafts for $15K" to "you need 8 extractions, 5 implants, bone grafts, sinus lift--the works and it'll cost you $36,000 (this guy diagnosed me entirely off of perio probing and a 1yr-old panoramic X-ray because his CT machine was broken and he couldn't run my disc -- yet, somehow his peers vote for him every year as Washingtonian's Best? Another 'Best' was the absolute worst - he talked to his assistant like I wasn't even there. I hope his Palm Springs retirement brings him more happiness than the job he performs in the most perfunctory way that I've ever witnessed. But this story ends (or, rather, begins) after landing in Dr. Sperling's chair today. She's a dream periodontist. Smart-smart, partners with you in treatment options, anticipates concerns and answers them before you even need to ask, is not an alarmist (so don't worry about being intimidated into a treatment plan) -- rather, is encouraging, kind, humane, and reassuring. From the first phone call to paying for my consultation when it was over - this is what a 'Washingtonian Best' experience is. I'm writing this review for those who're full of dread at the prospect of embarking on treatment, to those periodontist-hopping trying to find someone they can trust, and to those who've been so burned by dentists that they'd rather have their teeth fall out than sit in that chair ever again. Because it's a long life and you need healthy teeth and gums, you're just going to have to do this for yourself - it's your self-care, and you need to partner with a periodontist who will guide you to your best results.read more

My dentist referred me to Dr. Sperling to correct severe gum recession. I put the procedure off for a couple of years due to anxiety about oral surgery. I finally made the decision to have a consult and went ahead with the procedure. Using donor tissue, Dr.Sperling grafted all recessed areas of the gums under my lower teeth. Superb experience. I had to have a broken molar extracted, then bone augmentation with tissue regeneration and then an implant. None of the work was painful - not during the procedures and not after. Seriously. I followed the instructions Dr. Sperling gave me in a handout. I also used a bag of frozen peas on my cheek on and off for 24 hours after any work was done to prevent swelling/pain. I had no pain and no swelling. The only "negative" to the experience is time itself - its a process - and if you want it to heal properly you have to wait between visits. With initial consult and follow-ups mine took 8 visits and 9 months. Once your implant is completed you go to your regular dentist to get a crown. Dr. Sperling is competent, professional and darn nice and her staff is too. Her office is brand new, calming and clean. I highly recommend her.read more

I’d give way more than Five Stars if I could to Dr. Sperling & her staff because they are the very best! All are dedicated, welcoming, responsive & caring professionals. I am sooooooo glad I chose this practice to resolve my issues. It began with a throbbing tooth ache on my lower left side. A Cone Beam CT 3D Imaging was done & showed that the tooth was fractured beyond saving, Using the CT results to illustrate, Dr. Sperling explained in detail what she recommended needed to be done. Turns out that the teeth to the left & right of the affected tooth also needed attention. Procedures included extraction of affected tooth, installing 2 implants (affected tooth & vacant space to the left of the extracted tooth that had been covered with a bridge attached to the extracted tooth) prepping the tooth to the right of the extracted tooth to receive a new crown, & gum graft/buildup in the area. All proceeded painlessly. Dr. Sperling called me a couple days following the initial procedures to inquire whether all was well. A day or 2 thereafter I experienced what I considered to be an usual amount of bleeding thru-out the night. I waited till the morning to call the office to ask to come in. Of course the answer was yes – come right away. Dr. Sperling scolded me for not calling her cell phone during the night. My reply was I didn’t want to wake her. Nonsense said she. THAT’S DEDICATION!!! Periodic follow-ups to examine progress have ensued until I’m fully healed. Bottom line: I HIGHLY recommend this practice to anyone in need of periodontal care. No need to shop around.read more

I had an amazing experience with Dr. Sperling for gum graft using donor tissue.I went in for a consult and they were able to get me in for surgery quickly. Although I postponed the procedure was simple. Dr. Sperling was confident in her ability and it showed. On game day I popped a pill, had my mom drive me over and It was done. I awoke and was good to go. I had to refrain from drinking (and smoking if you smoke) for two weeks and be careful not do so things that caused my mouth to open too wide like eating chewy food and... *gasp* smile. LOL But it was an otherwise easy experience. Only downside was not being able to brush my teeth for two weeks. The mouthwash I had to use caused staining but Dr. Sperling had a hygienist who was able to clean it right up!read more

She is very informative and friendly, and skilled as I had minimal discomfort after the surgery, which was a great surprise. Dr. Sperling did a wonderful job with my gum grafting and explained everything as she performed the procedure which did a lot to relieve my anxiety. I was anticipating a lot of pain and experienced anything but. Unfortunately I am on a 'blood-thinner' and around 10 days into my recovery, I started bleeding from the graft sight. I must've scratched it with a sharp food and didn't realize it. I had just arrived by train to Manhattan in the evening and started bleeding very profusely. I called Dr. Sperling and she talked me through applying cold tea bags and non-stop pressure (20 mins) before it seemed to abate. While I was doing that, she called around to all of the nearby hospitals in New York to see who had an oral surgeon on call just in case I had to go to the Emergency Room at some point and she called and located a friend and colleague of hers in Manhattan who kindly agreed to see me if it didn't stop. Sure enough, a few hours later it was gushing again and I was able to see the oral surgeon and get sutured. I was starting to panic, but knew Dr. Sperling was keeping close tabs on me (she had called several times to check on my progress) and she had a great plan for me if I needed further treatment. I can't thank her enough for helping me from hundreds of miles away in what could've been a disaster. I was even able to salvage the conference and attend the following day, no worse for wear.read more

I saw Dr. Sperling initially for ongoing pain associated with one of my crowns. She immediately diagnosed the issue as a chronic infection which had eaten into the bone below the tooth. Dr. Sterling extracted the molar with as minimal discomfort possible and the infection resolved. After the area had healed, she then placed an implant for a replacement crown. Dr Sperling and her staff were caring and supportive during both procedures. She did a great job explaining in detail my options. She uses the latest technology which enables her to make custom implants. I had a periodontal gum graft on seven of my lower teeth. Dr. Sperling explained everything with great detail before the procedure on what to expect during and after. The staff explained the best way for me to take the prescriptions to me (don’t take any medications so I am super sensitive to medication). While Dr. Sperling was performing the procedure, she talked me through everything let me know how things were progressing all while listening to a great playlist in the background 😊. Post-surgery she called to make sure I was ok, I told her she was right on the mark on how I would be feeling, which was pretty good. I had a stitch come loose (think I caught my toothbrush on it) and she got me right in to make sure all was ok. Stitch removal was smooth sailing and last follow up was great. I had a graft to help with gum recession on one tooth. I admit I was worried going into it! The office was great! The staff are very well organized and professional -- from appointments to reminders to insurance to billing. Dr. Sperling and her assistant Anita are a great team! The doc told me it wouldn't be painful and I couldn't believe that would be the case -- but actually it was true. I think it took less than an hour (one tooth). I had to eat soft food for a couple of weeks (ice cream qualifies, and I actually didn't have to fight to get my family to "hands off my ice cream" for that time. Things were pretty much back to normal after the stitches were out, although I still used the other side to chew for a couple more weeks. Now I'm perfect! 🙂read more

Her openness in answering my questions helped alleviate a lot of my fear (I ended up being more nervous for the consult than the actual procedure).
