MARPE

(Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion)

MARPE is an advanced orthodontic technique used to widen the upper jaw (palate) in adolescents and adults. Unlike traditional expanders, which are most effective in younger patients, MARPE uses small biocompatible miniscrews (TADs) to gently separate the mid-palatal suture. This approach allows for successful upper jaw expansion even after jaw growth is complete.

How MARPE Works

  • A custom-fitted device is placed on the upper palate and anchored with miniscrews.
  • Gentle activation gradually expands the upper jaw.
  • The process typically takes a few weeks, followed by a retention period to stabilize results.

Who Can Benefit from MARPE?

MARPE is especially effective for adults and older teens where traditional expanders may not work. It is commonly recommended for:

  • Adults with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): Expanding the upper jaw can improve airflow and reduce sleep apnea symptoms.

  • Individuals with Narrow Palates: MARPE helps correct breathing difficulties and bite problems caused by a narrow upper jaw.

  • Adults with Jaw Structure Concerns: Expansion can improve bite alignment, facial balance, and oral function.

  • Patients Seeking Non-Surgical Options: MARPE provides a minimally invasive alternative to jaw surgery for many patients.

MARPE Made Simple: Treatment Steps Overview

Seamless teamwork between NovaPerio and your Orthodontic expert

Consultation and Assessment
A thorough evaluation, often including 3D imaging, will be performed to determine if MARPE is the right solution for your needs.

Customized Treatment Plan
Based on your exam, a personalized treatment plan is created, outlining how MARPE will work for you and what results you can expect.

The Periodontist’s role

Mini-scoring of the bone and Placement of Mini-Implants (TADs)
In some patients, the bone in the roof of the mouth (Palate Bone) is very strong. Mini-scoring makes tiny marks in the bone to help the MARPE appliance open the upper jaw more smoothly and effectively. It improves comfort, reduces stress on the teeth, and increases the success of treatment.

To anchor the MRPE appliance to the roof of the mouth (palate), a small biocompatible mini-implants (TADs) are gently placed Dr. Sperling and Dr. Yu.

The Orthodontist’s role

Activation and Expansion
Over several weeks, the expander is gradually activated. This applies controlled pressure to encourage bone growth and widen the upper jaw.

Monitoring and Adjustments
The Orthodontist will carefully monitor your progress, making any necessary adjustments to ensure optimal results.

Completion and Retention
Once the desired expansion is achieved, the mini-implants are removed, and a retention device is provided to help maintain the new jaw structure.
